Where Slovenians Travel and When

Where Slovenians Travel and When

Where do Slovenians like to travel, and when do they go? Experimental data from the Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia, based on mobile users roaming in foreign networks, provides clear answers.

Top Destinations

There are no surprises at the top. Croatia remains the number one destination for Slovenians. Despite growing debate about rising prices and repeated declarations that peak-season travel will shift elsewhere, the data tells a different story. Summer peak numbers have never been higher than in 2025. In July and August 2025, more than 60% of all Slovenian tourists visited Croatia, up from 57% in previous years. July is typically more popular than August, with one notable exception in 2024, when August overtook July, more on that later.

Austria ranks second. The peak months for travel to Slovenia’s northern neighbor are December, January, and February. Italy comesthird, withJanuary and especially February standing out, driven by school holiday skiing and the Venice Carnival. Germany is in fourth place, with a clear spike inJune 2024, when many Slovenians traveled to support their football team at the European Championship. That year disrupted the usual pattern: Germany in June, fewer trips in July, and a return to Croatia in August. Bosnia and Herzegovina ranks fifth, with peaks in the winter months.

Other Destinations

France holds sixth place. In absolute numbers, July is the most important month for Slovenian visits, likely influenced by the Tour de France.Hungary, Serbia, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia all peak inDecember, popular destinations for welcoming the New Year. Outside Europe, Turkey is the most important summer destination, while the United Statesattracts Slovenian visitors fairly evenlythroughout the year.

In short, Slovenians complain loudly about Croatia, book tickets elsewhere in theory, and then pack the car for the same beach as always. Old habits, warm sea, and familiar coffee apparently still win.
