Learn to build a complete Power BI report - from raw data to sharing it on the web.
The Power BI fundamentals course introduces the modern Microsoft technology that makes processing and analyzing large volumes of data from many sources far easier. Power BI connects to 200+ data sources, consolidates them into one system, and builds a stable reporting infrastructure.
Course goal
Familiarize participants with the Power BI platform and the capabilities of the Desktop version. You will learn basic data import from various sources, building interactive reports, and sharing reports through apps or web publishing.
Who it is for
The course is intended for anyone with no experience of the Power BI Desktop application, or who has not yet worked with the Power BI platform.
Notes
- The latest Power BI Desktop version is required (free to install).
- A business email is recommended for certain parts of the course - the Power BI platform restricts access for private addresses (e.g. Gmail).

Introduction
- What is Power BI?
- Power BI Desktop basics: Visual, Data and Relationship view; tables, columns, calculations.
- Power BI web service basics: My Workspace vs App Workspace; Datasets, Reports, Dashboards; report sharing types; user licensing types.
Power BI Desktop - part one
- Data import: .CSV and Excel; Power Query interface basics; data transformations.
- Building a basic data model: what a model is, loading data, joining relationships, Star Schema.
- Calculation basics: how calculations work in a model, filtering data, creating basic DAX calculations.
- Calculated column basics: columns vs calculations, Power Query columns vs model columns, conditional calculated columns.
Power BI Desktop - part two
- Data visualization: adding visuals and placing fields, the key characteristics of each visual type.
- Interaction between visuals: filter, highlight, cross filter, slicers.
- Interaction between report pages: Drillthrough, Sync Slicers, Tooltip page, Report level filter.
- Bookmarks & Selection pane, report themes and the Performance analyzer.
Power BI web service
- Publishing reports: app workspace, creating an application, sharing with users.
- Collaboration on the web service: report access, comments and subscriptions.
- Automatic data refresh: Data Gateway and schedule refresh options.
Additional important elements
- Row-level security, Alerts, Analyze in Excel.
- Q&A and quick insights.
