Power Query is the standard ETL tool that ships with Excel 2016 and Power BI Desktop. On this course you will learn to automate loading, cleaning and transforming data from all kinds of sources - without programming in VBA.
Course goal
Familiarize participants with the advanced capabilities of the Power Query ETL tool - from importing and combining sources to transformations and the basics of the M language.
Who it is for
The course is for anyone who often processes unstructured data from various sources (.txt, .csv, Excel, web, SQL databases) and needs to refresh, clean, filter or reshape it.
Notes
- The course can be taken through the Power BI or Excel interface.
- For Excel you need version 2016 or newer (or the Power Query add-on for older versions). Excel 365 is recommended.

Introduction
- What Power Query is and why to use it.
- Interface overview: Query pane, Applied steps, Preview pane.
- How it works: step recording, execution order and the difference from VBA.
Importing data
- Web sources and automated pulls.
- Excel files, CSV / Text files, and combining multiple files from a folder.
- SQL databases: import vs direct query and Query folding.
Combining queries
- Appending - combining identical structures.
- Merging - joining different structures via a key.
- Query dependency view.
Manipulations and transformations
- Data types (Number, Text, Date, Binary) and column operations (split, merge, rearrange).
- Cleaning and replacing values, filtering and sorting.
- Pivot vs Unpivot and Group By.
M language and custom functions
- M basics: let/in syntax, structure and parameters.
- Building custom functions and turning queries into functions.
- Combining functions and parameters.
